Internships play a vital role in preparing an individual for jobs in the industry. They are beneficial because they help develop your professional aptitude, strengthen personal character, and provide a greater door to opportunity. By investing in internships, you’ll give yourself the broadest spectrum of opportunities when seeking and applying for a job after college. Hence, I have spent my last six months interning with Commvault.

About Commvault

Commvault was formed in 1988 as a development group within Bell Labs and later designated as a strategic business unit of AT&T Network Systems. In 1996, it was incorporated as an independent company. The company deals in making software products that help in Data Protection, Data Recovery, and Backup & Restore.

Commvault is one of the leading organizations in the field of data and information management and security. The company, led by the CEO Mr. Sanjay Mirchandani, believes in working as a team and bringing the best out of each individual by nurturing, igniting, and evolving the values of the organization in each of its employees.

Getting Into Commvault — The Interview Process

The placement season had started and I had started preparing for placement rounds of different companies. It was mid-August and Commvault was one the first companies to arrive at our college for its recruitment drive. The complete drive comprised 4 rounds.

The first round was an online test that covered the fundamentals of Computer Science subjects like Operating Systems and Computer Networks. It also had some aptitude questions and three coding questions. The test had to be solved within 90 minutes.

After I qualified for this round, I had to go through a second round which involved writing all possible test cases for a given system or utility. (This round was only for those who applied for the SDET positions. For SDE, it was a 5-hour system design round). The time allotted for this round was 40 minutes.

After the test case round, there were 2 interviews and each of them lasted for at least an hour. Both the interviews mostly concentrated on networks and operating systems. They also asked some basic questions about databases, algorithms, and Python.

Working at Commvault

The internship began on 11th January 2021. On the first day, all the interns had an orientation session where we were made familiar with the culture of the company and how is a normal working day for any employee at Commvault. The training started on 12th January where we were made to learn about the product and were given different assignments and videos for studying about the product and understanding it clearly. The training went for about a month, after which we joined our teams. I was assigned to the Laptop Test team that deals with the automation and testing of End User products and features.

Overall my experience at Commvault has been very good. People here are friendly and always ready to help you. In the beginning, one might feel a little overwhelmed just by looking at such a large codebase and so much to understand about the product but once you start working, you slowly start learning about things. The culture at Commvault is such that the main focus here is not just to create a working code but to understand the product completely with all the minute details which further helps you in contributing to the company culture.

At last, I would like to thank my Managers and Mentors at Commvault for making me a part of their team and helping me throughout everything.
